View Full Version : Racist Obama?

Diesel

Some important people have suggested that His Holiness President B. H. Obama has a racist agenda. However, His Holiness continues to deny these allegations. It is suggested that he has called on white America to help out black America, but what has white America ever done but help out black America since slaves were originally brought here? Nowhere else in the world have black people been given more opportunities for success and happiness than here in America.

People still think of Obama as a rascist, muslim insurgent? Hell, I'm independent and even my vastly undecided mind can say this is complete bull shit. I realize this is more or less a joke thread however.

Especially considering this is Diesel.

I don't believe Obama intends to be racist. His actions and choices however, are inherently racist at times.

Racism in my mind, is the single most ignorant and detrimental face humanity can show.

I won't even begin to talk about Reverend Wright and his comments - or Obama's 20+ year involvement in that church with Reverend Wright as his good friend and perhaps closest personal adviser in life. That's old hat - but should be considered here as well.

Instead, let's talk about his actions after he already got a warning shot from the public in relation to Reverend Wright.

I was sitting in a classroom with 27 high school kids and we watched the inauguration. I had already been fairly uncomfortable with some of the statements that had been made by Obama and his team, but was willing to see what he would do once elected, rather than when trying to get elected.

So we listened to his Inaugural Address, and we saw history in the making. One line in particular caught my attention right off the bat. No one else seemed to notice, to my observation at least, but I definitely heard it.

I came home and did some research on the speech to make sure I heard right. I did some research to see where the comment came from and what historical significance it had. Then I got pissed:

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.

-- Reverend Joseph Lowery, during the Inauguration of Barack Obama

...When black will not be asked to get back...

As though we still live in a segregated society, and as though they were liberated by anything other than white people.

Is that discussed here though? No. Instead what we have is a reminder that whitey hates black people.

Not only is this comment inherently racist, it's also divisive and regressive. To believe this phrase as it was said by a spiritual leader at one of the most important events in American History (and I say that about all Inaugurations), is out of touch and irresponsible.

Had a white man made similar comments such as "When black learns to read" the historical context of the reference would not matter. The fact that a spiritual leader who happens to be black says it though, results in applause and laughter.

...When Brown can stick around...

Because they're not sticking around already. I presume he means people from Mexico, but can't be sure. Perhaps he means all Latins, in which case I'm one of them. If he means the "inclusive" browns, I suppose that does indeed include Latins. Granted I am apparently white, but I am in fact a minority. So screw you, reverend, I've never been kicked out of anything on the basis of my race, nor do I "stick around."

I am not here because I stuck around, nor is anyone else. We are here because we work hard, conduct ourselves with character and live our lives with as much integrity as we have the strength to do so with.

We did not "stick around."

We worked our asses off, thank you very much.

...When Yellow will be mellow...

I've known a lot of orientals in my day. Some were hyper, some were calm. I'm not certain what the historical significance of this particular phrase is, but no one cares what the historical significance of the KKK or "Old Dixie" is either.

It offends, and it is divisive.

Here's the cream filling for me though:

... And when white will embrace what is right.

My mother was in the Watts riots when she was in college. She and three of her friends went there in a VW Beetle to go help blacks protest. They turned her car upside down with her inside of it.

She staged and partook in rallies. She protested.

She raised me with a diverse interest in cultures and histories, and always allowed me to ask questions and then gave educated and enlightened answers. She made certain that I learned to value people for their nature from as far back as I could remember.

I was raised in an environment where I could say pretty much anything I wanted. "Fuck, shit, cock, pussy..." There were very few words that were off the table. One word I never used, however, was "nigger."

Not because I was afraid of the consequences - though had I thought about it I would have been - but because I was taught from a very early age not to think that way. It simply wasn't something I was exposed to. I didn't know racism was actually still prevalent in our society in certain places until I hit my late teens. I had no idea people still did that. I thought it was ancient history (of course, I was a kid. Everything was ancient history to me then).

Even on this board and in this environment, or even at other boards in other environments where the use of racial words are part of the vernacular - and Diesel, Chunky, Zero1, Louisa and many others can vouch for me here - I don't appreciate racial slurs even when offered with no malice or ill-intent, and I react harshly to them as a human being. I always have.

Some of us have always done what's right.

I resent the implication made by this speech. I resent the backwards looking outlook on race relations. I resent the insinuation that blacks are without any responsibility or culpability in modern race relations while the theme is always about what whites did wrong, and how they "try to keep us down."

Bad news, Reverend, the only thing keeping you down... Is people like you.

And this was Obama's chosen speaker.

The conversation we have on race in America today should be one of how to move forward. Now that we are indeed united as one country and one people, where do we go from here? How do we bring ourselves closer together?

"Kill whitey!" is not the conversation I want to have with my black friends. "Let's do this together" is.

I have many friends of different racial backgrounds. This last weekend we went to the movies together and there were two minorities and two (apparently) mostly white people there. Not once did we even discuss our races. It simply never came up. We told jokes and talked about the movie we had just seen.

But this is the kind of speech Obama endorses and encourages. When he does so, people listen. Some will buy into it and follow suit even if it's not entirely genuine on his part. He's the President. His words - or the words of those he chooses as pundits, have impact.

The President of the United States has an obligation to set a standard.

"That which unites us is greater than that which divides us."

This statement has been made by many men of great strength, leadership, and character throughout the history of man.

Perhaps one day, President Obama will be one of them. Today however, he is not.

Can I get an "Amen!?"

And an "Amen!?"

And "Amen."

Don't forget about obama's line about religion
"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers."
it is the first time in American history that a president has even acknowledged atheism as a belief system and it is in such a negative tone as "nonbelievers". The word, though nowhere near as bad as some other racial slurs, still carries prejudice and malice. It puts someone, who is in the gross minority, in lower standing than someone who is part of the majority.

but honestly who gives two shits? he was voted in because of one prejudice or another and there's nothing we can do about it. besides, africa is already claiming him as their creation.

Alastor

When did Obama make that statement?

I honestly think it's a bit more of a stretch to draw a conclusion based on "non-believers" as opposed to some of the racial remarks made, but fundamentally speaking I agree with you.

It's a harder sell simply because of the nature of the issue (religion as opposed to race), but you're right.

Fundamentally speaking they're the same type of bias and the same type of language that should have been vetted out during the speech preparation process.

Is it sloppy, or is it ignorance?

I asked this question often of the previous administration. I'm disappointed to be asking it again now.

The black man of America has a bigger outcry than the Working class of Germany during the Interbellum.

And that led to the NSDAP's rise and subsequent control of Germany.

Then that led to World War II.

And that led to SITZKRIEG-WWIII.

Also known as the cold war.

Also, niggers are too inept to understand history as it develops.

Returning to the original topic though, I don't care what Obama is. He seems to be working hard in the office and hasn't done anything to screw us over so far (not saying I expect him to be a flop). You can't fling shit about the economy either, because that was going to go down either way. Besides, the "high up" people calling him racist are inbred dickweeds who live off of complaining.

Black agenda? I don't give a damn. Honestly, nothing about my lifestyle has changed because of him. If he wants to help out blacks while working hard in other areas, let him. He's pretty much shown to be a fair president so far.

Our economy is on the verge of affecting everyone's life, and not in a good way. And you consider standing idly by and not complaining about the screwing we took "growing a pair"?

Yes, we need to make some tough decisions and get back on track. But blowing $700 Billion that we don't have was not something we could afford.

If we would have done something even remotely useful with that money then fine, but we still don't know what happened to half that money. We can be pretty certain though that it didn't go toward strengthening our economy.

The economy isn't close to shattering. The recession isn't nearly as terrible as you make it out to be. Besides, do you think that losing a job or a house is the end of the world? No. You move on. We have to be willing to take risks sometimes. You might argue it was a dumb risk to take, and I'm not disagreeing with that. However, worrying about $700 billion dollars isn't going to do you anything. If you want to make a statement, write your congressman a letter. They aren't going to read forums to hear your discontent.

The best option we can do for ourselves as Americans is to not depend on anything the government has to offer; we need to be able to support ourselves. The government could do a better job, but they aren't going to. The best you can hope for is a president that at least tries to make a difference.

Buying Cheerios is horrible to begin with. Why doesn't anybody try out some CSA's (Community Sponsored Agriculture)? You can get good discounts on fresh produce and help out local farmers at the same time. Our local CSA provides a week's worth of food for an entire family (large or small families come in different bundles). You can trade for other types of produce too.

But this isn't racist or on topic.
