Alright, to start off we need a resolution (just a statement really) to be debated.

Here are a few suggestions:

Resolved: In the United States, the Income Tax ought to be abolished.

Resolved: Legal law ought not to interfere with natural rights.

Resolved: In the United States, states ought to have the right to nullify federal law.

Resolved: In the United States, states ought to have the right to secede.

Resolved: In the United States, there ought to be no mandatory educational age.

Resolved: On balance, government employee labor unions have a positive impact on the United States

Resolved: Affirmative action to promote equal opportunity in the United States is justified.

Resolved: In the United States, organized political lobbying does more harm than good.

"Resolved: That the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated."

"Resolved: That the United States would be justified in pursuing military options against Iran."

"Resolved: US policies established after September 11, 2001 have substantially reduced the risk of terrorist acts against the United States."

NOTE: Resolutions that use "ought" debate the MORALITY of something, not the practicality nor the intelligence. Ought means values and principles. "Should" debates the practicality and what should be done, what is practical to be done, ought is more of a utopian question.

Hell no.

The American Way* would mean that every state would start to get butthurt over something stupid, refuse to comply with fellow states, and then secede.

AND THEN GET THEIR FUCKIN ASS WIPED

No. Practicality is one thing, but a lot of the government's income actually goes to aid both foreign and domestic. I know it doesn't seem fair for the government to take a percentage of one's hard-earned money, but a lot of people depend on government aid to survive.

Resolved: Legal law ought not to interfere with natural rights.

Everything in moderation; besides, most legal law goes to protecting natural rights. If you're referring to drug bans, even though they may seem almost unconstitutional, they do a lot to keep the streets clean and safe. As much as people want marijuana to be legalized, I don't want more potheads driving around stoned.

Resolved: In the United States, states ought to have the right to nullify federal law.

No. This would cause more problems than it would solve. The Jim Crow laws showed why this would be a bad idea.

Resolved: In the United States, states ought to have the right to secede.

Hell no. That caused a civil war, remember?

Resolved: In the United States, there ought to be no mandatory educational age.

Double hell no. The United States is a democratic nation. The best voters are educated voters. If you want the United States to remain an innovator and developmental leader, you need to have educated citizens.

Resolved: Affirmative action to promote equal opportunity in the United States is justified.

In moderation. Remember the court case a while back, where those firefighters' test scores were rejected because there weren't enough minorities represented?

"Resolved: That the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated."

Well, it was never really followed to begin with. Would it even be worth it?

"Resolved: That the United States would be justified in pursuing military options against Iran."

At this point, no. I don't believe the Obama administration is taking a tough enough stance against Iran, it would not look good for the US to invade another Middle East country, even forgetting we're still bogged down by two other wars.

NOTE: Resolutions that use "ought" debate the MORALITY of something, not the practicality nor the intelligence. Ought means values and principles. "Should" debates the practicality and what should be done, what is practical to be done, ought is more of a utopian question.

Idealism start wars. Practicality ends them.
