View Full Version : The War
So with the "war on terror" going terribly for the US, how do you think it will all end? I mean really. We've still got a massive military presence in Iraq, even though they're all sitting around in bases waiting to go home now. We've got soldiers dying all the time in Afghanistan (and it's only getting worse). We've got self-righteous British (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/7173446/Tories-would-back-war-with-Iran.html) and American (http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1147872.html) neoconservatives gearing their nations for war with Iran. We still have a shadow war in Yemen. We're still sending troops across the border into Pakistan. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article7017929.ece) Not to mention the countless drone strikes we're firing into Waziristan.
What the fuck are we doing? We're only generating more anti-West sentiment with every missile that misses its mark. With every stray bullet. With every boot on the ground. Seriously, where does it end?
I think we bring the troops back home and engage in talks with these "terrorists." Some truly are threats to us and need to be taken out. However, some seriously want to just get us off their holy land and have us leave them alone and let them carry on their lives as they always have. They don't need westernization. They just want us to leave. And so they fight on, against what they see as an Imperialist threat to their families and their nation as they once knew it. It is asinine for us to invade nations and expect to make any friends in the process.
But that's just my opinion. What's yours?

You say we just leave and it will be peaches?
There is always going to be a warlord there trying to kill us if we leave.

Also considering Iran has a 12er in charge in which they want to accelerate the end of the world.
OBJECTION!
I'd like to see evidence that it's not going well for us.
Iraq's in the pull-out stage as we refocus on Afghanistan, as we should have, and the reason there are still troops in Iraq is because you can't just rip a scab off all at once; you gotta peel at it.
Pundits and neocons will always be pundits and neocons. Never, ever, EVER take anything that they, think tanks, talking heads, or politicians have to say seriously. They will blab about turrism, patriotism, and yadda yadda yadda, but it's always and forever more just a bunch of fat politicians playing war with each other and making policy designed solely to ensure Party dominance over the Others. Their concern over our lives and our progress is trivial.
My opinion is that the West has Absolutely No Idea what on earth life and culture is like in southwest and central Asia. We can assume, we can take what we know from the TV and news - which is as minimal as we know - but we can Never attempt to effectively understand the Arab, the Afghan, or the Eastern mind by using Occidental thinking - they're totally different.
My sincerest suggestion to you is to check out MEMRI TV (http://memritv.org). It's all sorts of media straight out of the Arab World, Iran, and Afghanistan, with English subtitles. It's not Western media reporting on an Eastern event using Western understandings - it's wholly Arabic, Farsi, Dari and Pashtu media, simply translated into English. It's stuff you'd never even guess goes on down there, on a regular basis, that are simply part of a common way of life for them; stuff Western media never even bothers to cover.
You don't know about government-funded day camps where kids are taught how to be a modern urban war-fighter; you don't know about the education systems that teach indignation and refusal to accept peaceful terms. You don't know about the ways that organizations we deem "terrorist" use the civilian population as just another resource to use in the fight.
Look up on it.

I have to agree with Vmag, no one is having men dropping left and right. And as long there is instability there its going to affect the world.

you know who cares? fucking nobody, this is America fool. go outside and shout "military industrial complex" and see who says anything but "so". there is nothing we can do about it. war just is, because there is money in it.

hahaha, you have seen the might of the US military, do you really think there are "stray" missiles? the entire war in the middle east is a clean up job. ten years ago when you mentioned Afghanistan do you know what people thought? the sentiment was "that time where America funneled weapons to terrorists who put a new regime in power that fucked not just the country but the entire region." now people think Afghanistan is where we went to shoot a bunch of crazy Arabs who hate our "freedom". the world is still reeling from the cold war, every stray missile kills someone with information that could put the screws to the CIA and the FBI and the US government as a whole.
The biggest tragedy about all this, is that no one seems to care anymore. It's disgusting.

...caring and helping are two very different things, friend.
Different, maybe, but one is most often dependent on the other.

Why are our minds so advanced bu yet we're the most destructive animals on this planet. Our evolution is a curse for this world. Look at lions. Do they kill each other over a human invention of money rather than an actual need? No they only kill for things that are actual necessary for life, not something they thing they maybe need like oil. Damn our human race, we do nothing but wrong to this planet and to each other. We kill because we don't agree with each other or for something we think we need but is only a earthly possesion.
Kurt Vonnegut says it the best
I really wonder what gives us the right to wreck this poor planet of ours.
And
I was taught that the human brain was the crowning glory of evolution so far, but I think it's a very poor scheme for survival.

Our earth is fine. If we go and nuke ourselves all to death, the world'll clean itself up in a couple of millions of years. It's not a very long time as far as those things go.

"“We have shot an amazing number of people, but to my knowledge, none has ever proven to be a threat."
- General Stanley A. McChrystal, talking about the number of civilians killed at military checkpoints.
Now that is fucking phenomenal. At least he's telling the truth eh?
