I'm debating If for college I should get a Macbook pro or a gaming laptop like the Asus G53

They both run about the same price.

The Macbooks are realiable and will last me all through college most likely while still keeping a decent resale value. But they can't game for shit unless I get a 15 inch Macbook Bro which is like a 500 dollar difference from the 13 inch Macbook.

Meanwhile the Asus G53 is a good gaming rig with a GTX 560m video card, and can run demanding games like Skyrim and BF3 on high setting, but I don't know if it will actually last me throughout college.

So guys which computer should I spend 1200 bucks on?
I plan on waiting for the Ivy Bridge intel Processors to come out also in March

Go for the gaming PC. If worse comes to worse, you're capable of troubleshooting/upgrading it.

Plus, if it can play Skyrim like you say, then it can run Word just as easily. So that's your recreational and academical needs covered at once.

Though I'd say spend 500 - 700 bucks on a halfway decent computer, then use the rest of the 700 - 500 bucks on either cheaper components (you never need the NEWEST newest stuff), other gaming needs, or heck, school monies or savings.

You sure? I was reading up that the Republic of Gamer laptop (the Asus gaming laptops obviously) were kind of prone to breaking but that was with the older series of the laptop, I'm not sure if that is still a problem with the new series.

Apple computers, in my opinion, are difficult to play games on, don't have nearly the open-source kind of stuff going on as your Windows PC. Then, of course, it's Apple, so it's got a proprietary difficult to upgrade setup that gives you less hardware power for the cash. It also makes you look like a pretentious stereotypical college kid, whether you are or not.

However, my opinion may be biased, I have a disdain for Apple.

Ummm, you're confusing your terms here, plus you're misunderstanding me. To build a hackintosh, you're using a Windows-based PC and installing the Mac OS on it. Most folks used the Dell Mini 10v, since most of the hardware on it was very much Macintosh friendly. You can find a bit more info on building a hackintosh here: http://gizmodo.com/5869763/can-i-hackintosh-my-laptop

As for what I suggested, it is making your Mac into a dualboot system through use of Bootcamp or some other software. This allows you to load Windows onto your Mac and essentially make it a very versatile machine. If I recall correctly, when Gabe from Penny Arcade built his first dualboot Mac, he used performance in World Of Warcraft as his comparison point. On his high-end gaming rig, WoW was nice. On his Mac in OSX, it ran a little better, but not by much. The Windows build on his Mac blew both of those away, and I think that was the machine he'd started using for PC gaming after that.

Macs are amazing at doing anything that doesn't require a lot of technical details and manual handiwork. They rarely break down, and they can play most games--even old ones--as long as you have the right programs. My MacBook 2007 has never had a virus.

Windows is better at customizing and upgrading in terms of physical upgrades, I.e. graphics cards, chips, etc. Macs can upgrade the system itself fairly easily.

Mac laptops make you look like a college kid hipster

There's some kind of surreal quality about the actions of the stock market. For example, I participated in the Georgia Stock Market game this past spring, where we got 100,00 imaginary dollars to invest in an online simulation that followed the real stock prices. By the end of the two months of the game, I'd turned that $100,000 into $149,000, and that with a 2% broker charge. I was 7th in the state out of 4,000 something.

However, I invested $3,500 of my own money in the real market via Scottrade back in June. So far, I've turned that into a stunning $2,700.

Trading is not for the faint of heart.

Well, my laptop definitely has more horsepower than a 360, but I don't know if it'll be optimized well. I've had trouble with some other games that ought to run fine. That's in contrast to my desktop, which somehow still powers through new games full steam ahead two years later.

Eh, I'm content playing vanilla. Granted, consoles tend to not do mods, but that's besides the point. To each their own and mods do allow for worlds to open up and expand in several ways that the initial programming simply did not account for; but I like relying on my imagination and the whims of chance.

One of my earlier jobs was working tech support for Fidelity Investments. When you've got fake money lying around, it's pretty easy to play around with it it since there's no real loss that's happening, and that's how some of my users got the practice needed to get into the real world for trading. Many of them told me that one would need to do a lot of research on a company to determine whether or not to buy their stocks, some spending several months to look into what the company was bringing out and analyzing how well the company's stocks had done over the past few years. Regardless, it's a lot of luck and pretty much legalized gambling.

Now, if I saw a band of Thalmor walking by, that's a few less Altmer swords against our own.

Sovngarde was awesome. Like, I'd pay the full price of the game just for Sovngarde alone awesome. I didn't put Jarl Ulfric there yet, but I had serious nerdgasms seeing everyone else that was there. High King Torryg was awesomely cool, despite Ulfric calling him a puppet and everyone else calling him a mere boy. I did feel awful about Olaf One-Eye, though. It's cool that he made peace with Skavnir, but I did kind of rewrote historical documents to state he was Numinex in human guise.

I can support Tullius's view of what the Empire's positions should be, but I can't let Skyrim belong to those who would outlaw the worship of Talos and let Thalmor agents have free reign around the Empire to arrest those people, even if they had no other choice. Victory or Sovngarde.

It's a politics thing, lose the battle to win the war. The White-Gold Concordat may have banned worship of Talos and allowed Thalmor agents judiciary authority in the Empire, but this was agreed to in order to buy the Empire time to recover from a VERY costly war: accept a bit of humiliation now in order to prevent the Altmer from completely overrunning the land.

Hammerfell's success in repelling the Aldmeri Dominion has brought doubts into whether this was the right idea or not, but at the time, it was the safest thing that Emperor Mede could do for the safety and longevity of all the people under him.

Plus, Talos worship has never been Strictly prohibited. It was a nod-wink prohibition, wherein people were "allowed" to worship in private and nobody really did much against it, cept for the Thalmor themselves. Most Nords continued to worship Talos as they always did, including the slain High King, and Talos shrines in good condition could be found in many major cities.

Until Jarl Ulfric decided to bring massive attention onto the whole issue, the Thalmor wasn't putting the excessive pressure on the Empire that they are now, and the Empire had no reason nor the desire to enforce it.

If, all in all, the devouring of this world and the birth of the next are merely natural parts of the life cycle of existence. Perhaps then, the world is getting old and decayed, and the reason that disasters and tragedies are occurring throughout the world at such the extent they are now is Because the world is old and lacks vitality, and requires rejuvenation.

Pretty much, I've been thinking about my allegiance to Paarthurnax and my reliance on Odahviing. After the "end-game" speech from both of them, I've even gone to letting neutral dragons fly on by if they don't actively engage me first.

What gets me is, if I'm relying on the support of the dovah and taking their sage advice, what differentiates me from the Dragon Cult of old that early Man fought against?

In a sense, I suppose the difference is in leadership: the Dragon Cult worshiped Alduin and his enslavement of Mankind; the Greybeards and myself follow Paarthurnax and the passive Way of the Voice.

Though all in all, it seems a really miniscule difference.

"Just because you're Dragonborn doesn't mean we can overlook Paarthurnax's history. I am ORDERING you to kill him - if you don't like it, you're not a part of our club!"

And people say Astrid's Brotherhood lost track of their mission? The Blades haven't been the Blades since the Thalmor destroyed them. All they have left is a name, a historian, and nothing else.

The ex-priest of Vaermina and the priestess of Azura that I conscripted into the organization make better Blades than the two legacy members that were there for its downfall.

Although reading more into the lore... Emperor Mede DID initially reject the Aldmeri Dominion's proposition - Glory or Sovngarde, as Diesel demands. That plan of action was Precisely what led to the Altmer occupying Cyrodiil for well over a year, a decisive defeat that took a LOT of blood on both sides to reverse.

We know the Empire finally accepted punitive peace parameters pafter that because the vicious fighting left them weakened; but I'm wondering if it wasn't the same for the Thalmor?

Hammerfell, one independent province separated from Imperial resources, spent five years fighting the Aldmeri Dominion into a stalemate. So if stalemate, then:
Ald. Domin. = Hammerfell
and if
Ald. Domin. = Empire + Hammerfell
then
Hammerfell = Empire + Hammerfell?

Seems to me that either the Redguards are much more vicious fighting alone, or the Dominion was less of a threat after the White-Gold Concordat. They can definitely use the shaky peace to their advantage for recouping, and they stand to gain the most out of the Skyrim Civil War. Just saying, the Empire may have been less "bent over and took it from the Thalmor instead of fighting it out like a Man!" and more "actually managed to cripple a seemingly invincible onslaught of invaders".

It'd be great to know what went into the Second Treaty of Stros M'kai, what exactly the Redguards are obligated to hold up in exchange for complete Dominion withdrawal from Hammerfell.

Vmag

Then again, it could be that Hammerfell is completely incidental to the Dominion. The ultimate goal is to separate the Empire, after all, so if Hammerfell gained its independence, why devote so many lives to fighting it? A smaller assault, just enough to make Hammerfell look more capable than Cyrodiil - just enough to smear the Empire and put it into question.

Diesel
14-Jan-12, 22:32

k, so this is getting silly, so I guess it's time to introduce myself. My name is Jim and I am what most in this forum would consider as old. I received my EE degree from UT Austin and have spent fifteen years primarilly in the commercial audio/video market. My many years in the workforce has also allotted me ample time in server farms where I made use of my Cisco certs. My first computer was a Commidore Vic 20. Yes, I was an adult with interest in computers before Billy Gates could spell "dos".

My point being, the next guy who feels they need to google/wiki me is mistaken and should be pointed at and ridiculed.

Just a suggestion.

Vmag
02-Mar-12, 20:39
The trick is to relax, take it slow. Your body's initial reaction is to try to push Against it, and that hurts-- but, if you take it slow and easy and wait for your body to tell You when It's ready, it'll come naturally and you'll feel so much better for your patience.

I thought that was what I was doing. I'm retired and doing the things like golfing, drinking, dressing like a neutered rabbit, spanking naughty prostitutes. You know, the things that make a man "loose". What else can I do?

And then looking at the freshmen in my school, I can't possibly imagine ever being that dumb. But yet it's like I'm still the same person most of you probably remember from the Pandemic forums who's all confused about why I can't get girls except I've become more bitter about that now.

So I saw these guys in concert this past Saturday. Erica and I headed up to Greensboro the Saturday prior to scope out the venue. She had me try out a few drinks, we joked around with the bouncers, showed them my old ID-- doesn't matter who you are, everybody gets a laugh out of my high school hair. Needless to say, when we returned to Greensboro for the concert, the staff were all too familiar with me.

The show itself was amazing. Never heard of Conditions or Secrets, but them and Abandon All Ships were top notch, and Sleeping With Sirens brought the house down. I gotta admit, as far as losing my concert virginity goes, the experience was completely pleasant.

Find a discussion in that :P

Holy shit you listen to post-hardcore Vmag?
I would have never imagined you listening to music like that, my respect for you has grown for listening to some amazing music.

I've been listening to Rock again, all types of it, from acoustic to screamo and post hardcore. Its just amazing how you can feel so much more emotion in a song that has real instruments and members than you can from a poet over computer made beats (rap).
I regret not being able to watch my all time favorite singer play here in San Diego, something i'll regret till I get to actually see him play live.

You can blame Erica for that one. Didn't just, well, basically save my life in Afghanistan, but has been introducing me to all sorts of cool stuffs. She got me listening to Falling in Reverse, too, which we'll be seeing next month in Orlando. I'll be driving for that one (・`ω´・)

Also, she got me to try out drugs. And, it turns out I actually liked them, a lot. It's been about a week now since she surprise visited me during lunch and offered to have me sample them, but now not a day goes by that I don't partake just a little.

No one did their research though. And, it's just AP English 11. The 32% is what's not spent on salary or travel... Half of this goes to militant organizations..
