View Full Version : Watchmen
Anyone gone to see this yet? I went and saw it last night with some friends. It's actually pretty good overall. I really liked the Rorschach character a lot, even though he at times was the most evil of all of them.
Anyway, no spoilers or anything, but I wanted to see who else went and what they thought of it.

The bar incidents are the best. I love the comic; I'll have to see the movie soon.
I was going to see it tonight, but quite frankly pneumonia and moviegoing don't mix, so I'm going to wait a while. But nonetheless, this movie is fucking awesome, or at least appears so from the many sneak peeks I've seen of it.
Dude, the bar incidents creeped me out the most!
Where he has his little Vietnamese girlfriend and she's pregnant ... Twisted shit, man. Twisted shit.

It's definitely on my hit list of movies, despite my hitlist of movies only being two or three movies long. But it looks to be a genuinely good movie plot wise and action wise. If can scrap together the spare change in my wallet, I may go see it.
This movie looks really cool... worth the money to see it?

I think so, and I don't feel that way about many movies.
I went to see it with my friends Tim and Wayne, both of whom have extensive knowledge and background of comic book history. It was explained to me thusly:
In the early 40's there was a movement in comic books to get very bold (relatively speaking). Lots of cussing, nudity, violence, graphic depiction of gross things and shocking things... Then the 50's hit and we saw things such as the McCarthy Era and a puritanical movement come back to mainstream America. This continued through about the early 70's.
When that happened, most comic books had to take a step back. For example, girls could no longer get hit in a comic book. This became a major issue for comics with heroines as their main character, such as Wonder Woman. Heroes have to get knocked out sometimes, but no one could hit a girl with anything (including fists) so they always had to use a ray gun or a sleep gas or some other cheesy method.
This was when The Watchmen was made - at the height of comic book heresy. What was unique about it was how offensive, graphic, blunt and cruel it was. It talked about issues directly that at the time were only spoken about in whispers behind closed doors.
My friends say that the movie is very true to the original comic - which ran 12 issues. The only thing that's changed is that the final event was attributed to space aliens in the comic book rather than one of the heroes.
One of the things that at the time made this comic sort of a "Citizen Kane" to comic books was the fact that the bad guys aren't all that bad, and the good guys aren't all that good. The "Evil hero" concept wasn't abundant in pop culture at the time (and aside from Batman and a few others never has been).
It helps if the comic's history is understood to help understand the movie and the point of the story. Like I said before, it's not like a normal comic book movie.
Yes, it's a good movie. I usually hate going to the movies and am sorry I went. In this case however, I am very glad I went and saw this movie. It's a good movie that is worth the :10bux:.

I saw the IMAX version, and it definitely wasnt what I expected. A good movie nonetheless.

No.
It's worth the free movie ticket coupon I won in a Guitar Hero tournament.
Who'd have thought it was a Saturday morning cartoon? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDHHrt6l4w)

That's really, really twisted.
On sooo many levels.
Ridiculous.
I wasn't expecting to have to stare at a giant blue guy's junk for an hour and a half of it. Also, that bar scene was totally fucked dude, not kidding. And the Jail scene too.
I liked the jail scene. It seemed pretty preposterous though. If a guy who is as obviously dangerous as Rorschach is kills one of my two toughest thugs from behind his holding cell, the last thing I am doing is standing there idly while I send my last big thug into the cell with him.
Also, prisoners are bad guys. I don't mind seeing bad things happen to them.
I did wonder why the midget didn't make any noise when whatever happened to him in the bathroom happened.
