View Full Version : Yet another idea...
I know another forum that uses this format that has a chat function. Not IRC...just a button that you click on in the forum that takes you directly to chat.
I'm thinking it might cut down on the shit posting and would help us to get to know each other better. Then again, maybe we don't want to know each other better. :/
Would anyone be interested in this?

I would, as everyone might have noticed, I don't tend to ever shut up...

I don't like it... From my experiences, chatboxes reduce posting activity by as much as 80%.

True, but at the same time it will prevent a lot of shit posting when only two or three people are online and having a conversation on a thread.

He specifically writes off IRC though, in favor of an in-site chat applet that allows you to post messages with other members from the comfort of your browser window.
I agree with Striker that, in the forums I have been to that utilize said feature, the actual posts drop a large percentage, but war forum games and lounge-type threads pull just as much away from actual discussion threads anyways.
That the forums in my experiences were usually younger crowds and remnant survivors from just-on-the-cusp-of-popularity websites collapsing into black holes might make my experiences a Little less than typical.

You make a good point, actually points. Forum games and lounge-type threads are just as likely to keep people from posting in the main discussion threads. Also I believe that the chat might work better here where members are not members because of a game, movie, or book, but simply because we want to be a member of the community. And also, if it turns out that it kills the threads otherwise we could always get rid of the chat. We really can't know the outcome until we try it.

The problem is that most of those chat programs suck total ass.

I'm sure that the amazing "elves" who run this site have the ability to create a much better chat program though. :D

I honestly don't know - it's certainly not within my realm of knowledge at least.
Ability? Possibly.
Inclination? Fuck no.

Not that are free. I've never looked at the ones people can buy.
Go nose around, see what you can find. Find out how much it costs.

Can do. But I don't know a whole lot about the coding of this site, so does the chat need to have a specific code or requirement to work on this site?

Oh I know, I just figured I could help try to find something, see how it works, and if it is a good possibility for the site.
Okay, I need others to look at this to see if it's legit, and if it's actually $34 and that's it, or if it has other continuous costs. And I would appreciate if someone who knows more about the subject could check to see if it is actually good or not, but here is a link to it.

Find a demo. I share Chunky's view though on Java.

A demo? It has a free trial version on it. At the bottom of the page on the link I put up it has download free trial version.
Now to show how stupid I am...So that was a java chat program? I didn't see anything specifically saying that, so for future reference how to I distinguish java programs from other programs? And is there a specific type you would prefer?

You don't really have much choice. Almost all chat programs are going to use java, among other things.
And no, there's not a lot of choice on the matter. That's why we don't have a chat and why we never looked at them before.

Oh okay. I can try to find one without java. But there is a trial version of that one for 21 days if you want to try it out.

I have a better idea. Find someone who has a paid version and let's tramp-stamp their site to test it out.

Oooh, good idea. You don't happen to know a way to find a site with a paid chat do you? If not that's find, I'm gonna start searching blindly, but if you know a quicker way to find them let me know.

Find the name of that chat program you linked to a few posts back. Google that and "forum" in the same search. Then see if it's a community or not.

WOW, I found one, it looks a lot like this site, it's a vbulletin site. What's really weird, its a forum for people with ADHD.....It's like fate that I found it. So I joined and everything. Turns out that their chat is currently down. So I'll let you know when it's back up.

Oh yeah, a forum full of Speysiders...
Find out why their chat is down if you can. That matters to us since we might be looking at it for our place.

Hey, I have ADHD and I am offended to be put in the same category as him...
I'm trying to figure it out though. It seems to go down a lot and I don't know if it's because the program is crappy, or if it's because they have no idea what they are doing.

If it's a forum full of Spay's I suspect it couldn't keep up with the 300 admins that were never satisfied with how it was being run.

Disagree. Chat features suck the life out of the forums and are havens for poor quality. This early on, we can't have a chat feature like that. Our community is just too small to have something of that sort.
I Don't want ads anywhere.
I definitely don't want our casual chats to be public. We say things off the cuff and in gest or a particular mood in chat rooms. The environment lends itself to being spontaneous and not well thought out. The things we say could be things we really don't want out in public or the that shouldn't be made public. On a board, one has time to think and contemplate what they're doing, and they can always go back and edit things.
In a chat, once it's out there, it's out there. I don't think that's in the best interests of the community.
In terms of security I know of no chat program aside from IRC propper that doesn't harvest user information or bombard people with ads.
Ok, well, sorry I brought it up. :/

It's a decent idea. Worth exploring. Don't be sorry and don't worry about it. We simply can't find any that don't either steal info, put out a public feed, or bombard people with ads.
When we do find one, let's revisit it.
